‘It’s too soon to say whether this will be the start of a longer-term trend’
Just when you thought 2022 was looking up, three more cases of antibiotic-resistant “super-gonorrhoea” have been located in England.
The Government revealed on February 8 that a 20-something-year-old woman from London, and a couple from the Midlands had been diagnosed with “super-gonorrhoea.” There is currently no known connection between the cases, reports Metro.
All three people have contracted a strain of Neisseria gonorrhoea, which is known to be resistant to the primary treatment of ceftriaxone. While prevalent in the Asia-pacific region, the strain has never been widespread in the UK.
The first case was identified in London in November last year- also a man in his early 20s.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) are waiting for news about the treatment of the three patients. Dr Katy Sinka, STI Section Head, said it’s “too early” to predict the spread.
She added: “After a couple of years without any cases of this hard-to-treat form of gonorrhoea, we have now seen four cases in the last two months.
“It’s too soon to say whether this will be the start of a longer-term trend, but we do know that STIs are on the rise in general.

“Getting an STI isn’t as simple as taking some medicine and moving on with your life – if not properly treated, they can have long term impacts on your and your partner’s health.”

Sinka recommends using “condoms consistently and correctly” and to “test regularly for STIs and if you have any symptoms such as unusual discharge, don’t have sex until you are tested.”
