You need to listen to this 1980s cover of Arctic Monkeys’ I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor

You've heard I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor, but have you heard it mashed up with Yazoo's 'Don't Go'? No? Well listen to this

Dancing to electro-pop like a robot from 1984

It’s really easy to identify a song from the 1980s. They’re usually all on Magic FM but aside from that, synth sounds, a massively amplified snare drum and echo effects on the vocals are the biggest signifiers of a song being from the decade that brought us so much iconic cheesy pop music.

And indie band Deco – not clear whether they’re named after the Portuguese playmaker or not – have tapped into that with their series of modern/retro pop mash-ups that are taking the internet by storm.

Their latest combines the iconic hook from Yazoo’s Don’t Go with Arctic Monkey’s breakthrough single I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor. Both iconic tunes in their own right, but not the type of songs you think would be well suited to a mash-up. But you’re wrong. It works perfectly.

Sure, it sounds much more like Yazoo than AM, but that’s kind of the point. Deco’s ability to incorporate Alex Turner’s lyrics into an 80s pop hit is so wildly impressive, you begin to appreciate this mash-up as a song in its own right. It’s just a pure fire hit.

Listen to it.

If you like that, Deco have done a few more, which you can find on their Twitter feed. They’ve also mashed up Oasis’ Wonderwall and Smalltown Boy by Bronksi Beat.

And if that tickles your fancy, you can check out their own music, which isn’t bad either.
