Annie Mac’s last Radio 1 show closed the chapter perfectly

Annie Mac- Iconic, legendary, and great hair, too

Annie Mac’s tenure on Radio 1 has earned her critical acclaim, praise from other industry giants, and not to mention banging tune after banging tune.

Mac joined Radio 1 as an assistant producer before hosting her first show in 2004, which sky rocketed her into the position she has held for so long. As one of the leading names in the business, Mac’s voice and keen musical intuition will be missed greatly across the nation.

“It’s been 17 years and tonight we celebrate.

“Tonight is going to be hopefully a really, really fun and nostalgic and hopefully not too emo ride.

“I have got the waterproof mascara on, my hands are actually shaking,” she told listeners at the start of her last show.

She added: “I’m not going, hopefully, I will get a job on the radio at some point in the future.

“I would really like that and I’m still going to be doing other things.

“I’m looking forward to having the creative space to do new things and try new things.

“But being at Radio 1 is such a party. I’ve had such brilliant times with the other DJs over the years, I have made friends for life.”

Mac is not moving straight into another broadcasting job. Instead, she is leaving to focus on podcasting, writing, and spending time with her children.

“When I started off at BBC Radio 1, there was only two women looking after radio shows that played alternative music,” she said.

“They were Annie Nightingale and Mary Anne Hobbs, and what’s great is that now, 17 years later, there’s so many.”

Mac also attributed her home life to her time on Radio 1, having used the station to get to know her husband Toddla T.

“I started on Radio 1 in 2004 and have done a lot of things since then in my professional life and personal life,” she said.

“One of those was getting married and becoming a mother to two children, and it was thanks to Radio 1 that I got to know my husband a little bit better.”

She had invited the DJ to the station for an interview, and a year on they were living together. Screw Romeo and Juliet; I want what those two have.

Mac’s voice has narrated much of our lives. She was there for numerous night outs, first-kisses, and most notably for providing us with consistent bangers.
