BREAKING: The Stone Roses to release a new single tonight at 8pm

What the world is waiting for

Matt Tate

There’s been gossip for a while now that legendary Manchester band The Stone Roses are going to be releasing some new material, more than 20 years after their last studio album, Second Coming.

Earlier this week bassist Mani told a fan to keep an ear out in the coming days, causing a frenzy of internet excitement.

The rumours have only intensified with the band’s iconic lemon logo randomly appearing in cities around the country.

Well, we now seem to have official confirmation on exactly when that new music will arrive…TONIGHT.

A post to the Stone Roses Facebook page has revealed that they will release a new single at 8pm on Thursday (today).

One (impressively detailed) comment on the post read: “No effing way, been waiting 21 years for this. Roses, please don’t dispel the myth that you’re not of this earth as no mere mortal could write so many great songs. Make this new song baggy and funky and a follow on from One Love which is a direction you should have taken instead of the 5 year hiatus and a plundering of the Jimmy Page school of riffs. Although, regarding The Second Coming; I like it!”

Another: “If you release a great single tonight is will be the biggest and best comeback ever. Please God don’t let us down make it a f*cking stormer.”

No pressure, then.

There’s been a relentless clamouring for new music from fans since The Stone Roses reformed at Manchester’s Heaton Park in 2012, and the news has already spread like wildfire on social media.

The band have four upcoming headline shows at The Etihad Stadium in their hometown, before crossing the pond to play Madison Square Garden in New York. They’ve also scheduled a show in Dublin and a headline slot at T In The Park.

Currently confirmed live dates:

Manchester, Etihad Stadium (June 15, 17, 18, 19)
New York, Madison Square Garden (June 30)
T In The Park (July 8)
Dublin, Marlay Park (July 9)

You’d think that any new music will be played to a crowd for the first time at these much-anticipated summer gigs.

This is the one, guys and girls. Fetch your bucket hats.
