This will be the greatest club night in the history of music
“Africa” by Toto is a transcendently brilliant work which will probably come to define our era in times to come. In the future, when aliens come down to explore our planet, the survivors of the Trump-Kim Jong-Un war will only have four remaining works to show them: The Bible, the complete works of Shakespeare, the complete works of Dickens, and “Toto” by Africa.
It’s the sort of song that you listen to, and think “Why do I ever listen to any other music?” No other song is going to be as good as “Africa” by Toto, so why do we even bother with new bands?
Finally, though, someone has seen sense. On November 30th, The Exchange in Bristol will host a night where they will only play the hallowed track, and absolutely nothing else, all night long. For five hours straight, between 11pm and 4am, the main room will play the original version on repeat, with the second room spinning various covers and remixes of the track.
And the purists of you out there will be glad to here it will be played off the original vinyl.
The night is to raise money for an African charity, and is the brainchild of local DJ Michael Savage.
“What started out as a really stupid idea from a stupid drunken night out has become a stupid reality,” he told BBC News.
“I drunkenly suggested I’d run a night playing just that track two years ago. I kept talking about it and now I’ve got to do it.”
“I feel quite sorry for the bar staff, they’re going to be really stuck in the middle.”
The night is raising funds for Temwa, a charity based in Bristol that helps people in rural areas of Malawi.
