Drake may be one of the busiest people on the planet but he’s not above taking time out from his busy schedule to make a young fan’s day
Making a special fan’s birthday wish come true, Drake turned up to Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago where 11-year-old Sofia Sanchez was awaiting a heart transplant.
Sofia recorded her own version of the viral “In My Feelings” challenge, which has seen everyone from Ciara and Will Smith to Lexy Panterra and Odell Beckham Jr. jumping out of a moving car and walking alongside it to the lyrics “Kiki, do you love me? Are you riding?”
Swapping the car for her hospital wheelchair, Drake saw Sofia’s take on the challenge whilst on his Aubrey & The Three Migos tour which was when he decided to go and visit her while in Chicago on a tour stop.
Posting a video of the visit to his Instagram, Drake revealed in the caption that the pair chatted all things “Bieber and Owls and Basketball.”
Once Drake entered the hospital room Sofia screamed “Oh my God!” to which Drizzy responded “You asked me to come, I’m here.”
He followed it up with: “You wanna give me a hug or what?” at which point Sofia jumped off of her hospital bed.
“I’m so happy I got to see you,” he told his young fan, to which Sofia squealed: “I’m so happy you came.”
The pair spent the rest of their time together taking selfies and Instagram videos. Drake also gave Sofia some Scorpion merchandise and even performed “God’s Plan” for her.
Afterwards, he gifted Sofia with his autograph but made sure that he had her scribble hers down first.
The hospital said that the rapper was generous with his time and Sofia said meeting him was “a miracle.”
Sofia has been diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, a heart muscle condition that can make it hard for the heart to deliver blood to the body and potentially lead to heart failure. A heart transplant is often needed to survive – Sofia is currently on the waiting list.
Undergoing open heart surgery three weeks ago in order to connect a mechanical pump to help support her heart and blood flow, Sofia’s surgery often serves as a bridge to heart transplantation and is only performed four times a year at the Lurie Children’s Hospital.
“Having this one special day where she doesn’t have to be a sick patient and doesn’t have to be a girl waiting for a heart, it’s just a little girl who’s a fan of a great artist, it’s pretty special,” said Sofia’s cardiologist, Dr Bradley Marino.
