JAY-Z takes shots at Kanye West on new Meek Mill album… or does he?

Jigga doesn’t hold back in his verse on “What’s Free”

Meek Mill today released his highly anticipated new album Championships, and while fans were glad to see the MMG rapper back at his best it was the JAY-Z feature on the album that caught the attention of listeners the most.

JAY-Z’s relationship with Kanye West has long been documented. Starting off as collaborators who went on to become friends, together they formed The Throne and released the critically acclaimed Watch the Throne.

Then going from brothers to acquaintances and then bickering friends – all in the public eye – the latest chapter in their relationship hears Hov possibly take aim at Ye on “What’s Free”.

Jay spits:

“No red hat, don’t Michael and Prince me and Ye/ They separate you when you got Michael and Prince’s DNA/ I ain’t one of these house niggas you bought/ My house like a resort, my house bigger than yours/ My spou- (C’mon, man)/ My route better, of course.”

Rejecting the Trump-affiliated Make America Great Again hat that Ye has famously been seen sporting over the last few months, the lines could be interpreted as a diss but also just JAY-Z clarifying where he stands on Kanye West and the controversy surrounding him as of late.

The line about Michael Jackson and Prince alludes to the fact that the media fabricated a beef and drove a wedge in-between the two iconic superstars for years and Jay doesn’t want that to happen to him and Ye.

UPDATE: JAY-Z has since claimed the lines in question were not aimed at Kanye, instead they were more a show of solidarity by informing people not to pit him against Ye.

Produced by Tarik Azzouz and StreetRunner, “What’s Free” features a sample of The Notorious B.I.G.’s infamous “What’s Beef?”, taken from the late rapper’s Life After Death album, and also features a verse from Rick Ross.

Rozay’s verse hears him address 6ix9ine’s recent arrest on federal racketeering charges:

“Screaming ‘gang gang,’ now you wanna rap/ Racketeering charges caught him on a tap/ Lookin’ for a bond, lawyers wanna tax/ Purple hair got them faggots on your back.”
