Lorde reportedly felt ‘insulted’ by Grammy organisers

James Dawson

Her fans were angry at the decision made by the award ceremony’s bosses.

In a scene I’m sure we can all relate to, Lorde drank from a hipflask at last night’s Grammy Awards, after she turned down the opportunity to perform because she wasn’t offered a solo slot like her male contemporaries.

The snub came despite many of her male contemporaries being given solo slots on the night. Reports claim that in protest the New Zealand-born singer refused to perform all together when she was offered the opportunity to lend her talents to the Tom Petty tribute in a group performance alongside Chris Stapleton and Emmylou Harris.

The 21-year-old had been nominated for the Album Of The Year at the 60th annual edition of the awards, for her second studio album Melodrama.  Also nominated were Childish Gambino, JAY-Z, Kendrick Lamar, and Bruno Mars – who picked up the award on the night.

She attended the show with a a quote from New York artist Jenny Holzer stitched onto the back of her dress.

The passage from Holzer’s Inflammatory Essays read:  “Rejoice! Our times are intolerable. Take coverage, for the worst is a harbinger of the best. Only dire circumstances can precipitate the overthrow of oppressors. The old & corrupt must be laid to waste before the just can triumph. Contradiction will be heightened. The reckoning will be hastened by the staging of seed disturbances. The apocalypse will blossom.”

She posted an image of the extract to her Instagram, adding the caption: “My version of a white rose — THE APOCALYPSE WILL BLOSSOM — an excerpt from the greatest of all time, jenny holze.”
