Best Christmas song ever?
Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ has finally got to the top of the UK charts.
Despite being one of the greatest Christmas songs ever, the song had never reached that point before.
The song was originally released in December 1994, but was kept off the top spot by East 17’s ‘Stay Another Day’. That song is also a banger, but it is not a Christmas song. Just because there are bells on it, and they wear big winter jackets in the video, it doesn’t mean it is a Christmas song. The lyrics are not about Christmas, so it doesn’t count.
‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ first got back into the top ten in 2007, when it got to number four. This was the era when digital downloads, and later streaming, started to become how most people consume music, so it meant that old Christmas classics would work their way back into the charts every year without the need for a physical re-release of the single.
It has returned to the upper echelons of the UK pop charts every festive season since, reaching number two in 2018 and 2019.
The song holds the record for the longest time spent in the UK top 40 before reaching the top spot.
Now, 26 years after the song’s original release, it has finally got to number one.
‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ was streamed 10.8m times this week, which is more than any other song in any week of this year so far.
The song has also sold 1.24m copies since its first release, which makes it the 84th highest-selling song in history.
