I’m not sure I’m ready for this. I didn’t think I would ever see the day. Michael Jackson’s Thriller has been dethroned as the biggest-selling album of all-time… in America.

Knocked off the top spot by The Eagles, Thriller has been replaced by Their Greatest Hits (1971 – 1975) which has officially been certified as the biggest-selling album in U.S. chart history.

Confirmed by the Recording Industry Association of America, the band’s 1976 compilation album has been certified 38x platinum with over 38 million copies sold. It’s the first time since 2006 that the album has been re-evaluated while Thriller‘s numbers (33x platinum) were updated last year.

So what’s the third biggest-selling album of all-time in the United States? It’s The Eagles again. Their 1977 album Hotel California has sold over 26 million copies.

Thriller, which features the hits “Beat It” and “Billie Jean”, may have been dethroned Stateside but it still remains the biggest-selling album of all-time worldwide having been certified 47x platinum.
