A first single from the record, ‘SOS’, is coming out on Wednesday
Almost a year to the day since the death of Avicii, fans will get the chance to remember the Swedish DJ, real name Tim Bergling, when his first posthumous song is released on 10 April.
The single SOS is the first track of an upcoming album produced by the 28-year-old’s collaborators Carl Falk, Albin Nedler, and Kristoffer Fogelmark. Avicii’s personal notes, some written in the days leading up to his death, formed part of the material used to craft the tracks.
It is due for release on 6 June, 2019, with the apt title of ‘Tim’ and will include the Chris Martin-featuring track ‘Heaven’. Overall, the album is described by New York Times as a mix of psychedelia, Arabian music, Caribbean music, and more.
Avicii, who passed away on 10 April, 2018, was said to have been writing new music up to his death and his family have released a statement explaining the release of ‘Tim’.
“[Avicii] left behind a collection of nearly finished songs, along with notes, email conversations and text messages about the music,” read the statement.
“The songwriters that Tim was collaborating with on this album have continued the process to get as close to his vision as possible.
“Since Tim’s passing, the family decided not to keep the music locked away – instead they wanted to share it with his fans all around the world.”
‘Tim’ will also make money for charity with the proceeds going straight to the foundation set up in the aftermath of his shock suicide.
“All proceeds from the album will go to the Tim Bergling Foundation, the new non-profit organisation set up in Avicii’s name to help treat mental illness and prevent suicide, which his family launched at the end of March,” his family added.
