In June he announced a commitment to donate £10m over the next decade
Rapper Stormzy has donated £500,000 to a scholarship fund with the aim of helping disadvantaged students go further.
The donation to the Black Heart Foundation will provide financial assistance to students from lower-income backgrounds, covering a variety of areas from training, travel and funding academic studies.
It is the first donation made following Stormzy’s announcement in June that he would donate £10 million over the next decade to groups focused on ending racial inequality in the United Kingdom.
His decision came off the back of the Black Lives Matter protests which spread across the world in June, following the death on May 25 of American George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police.
His death, and the light it shone upon the daily and incessant racial inequality in our society, led to protests across the world, including the United Kingdom, where hundreds of thousands took to the streets to call for an end of racial discrimination.
Stormzy’s donation, which is made through his Merky Foundation, will double the number of students on the Black Heart Foundation scholarship programme up to 200.
A spokesman for the Merky Foundation said: “Their Each Day Every Day campaign is a brilliant initiative and we are elated that our donation has played a key part in helping them achieve their target.”
