The Weeknd surprises fans with new EP, My Dear Melancholy, listen here

SURPRISE!

This week there were murmurings that a new project from The Weeknd was coming. Then the Toronto singer/songwriter was forced to confirm the rumours when billboards revealing a new EP were accidentally put up too early.

Released at midnight last night, The Weeknd has delivered My Dear Melancholy.

Made up of six new songs, the new EP is the follow-up to his 2016 album Starboy. However, instead of being an extension of the loud and colourful commercial smash, this is a return to Abel’s roots. Think tormented lyrics, art-house temperament, splattering snares, and more echoes than someone stuck down a well.

With the only feature on the EP being gothic electro king Gesaffeistein, who has also produced for Kanye West, don’t be surprised if there are times when the music feels like it’s hiding in the shadows and is painted with neon synths and finished with a fuzzy sheen.

If you’re a fan of The Weeknd’s House of Balloons then you’re likely going to love the emotional rollercoaster that is My Dear Melancholy.

My Dear Melancholy, tracklisting:

  1. “Call Out My Name”
  2. “Try Me”
  3. “Wasted Time”
  4. “I Was Never There” (Feat. Gesaffeistein)
  5. “Hurt You” (Feat. Gesaffeistein)
  6. “Privilege”
