11 students have now died at the University of Bristol in the last two years

A second-year student was found dead on Sunday morning

Bertram Crawford, a second-year English student at the University of Bristol, died on Saturday night.

The news follows a recent increase in the number of reported student suicides at British universities. Between 2007 and 2015 the number in the UK increased by 79 per cent, from 75 to 134.

The University of Bristol, in particular, is facing student deaths more frequently than most, with JOE reporting on the seven undergraduates that took their own lives in a period of just 16 months.

Mr Crawford’s body was discovered by emergency services just before 9am on Sunday. Known as Bertie,  he was a popular student with a wide group of friends.

Of the 11 students that have died at Bristol in the last two years, three were very closely clustered together during last year’s summer exam period at the south-west institution.

A university spokesperson said of the incident: “We have received the very sad news that Bertram Crawford, a second-year undergraduate student studying English, tragically died last weekend.

“There is nothing harder for our community than the death of one of our students, and our thoughts are with Bertie’s family and friends at this very difficult time. We are doing our best to help and support all students and staff who have been affected by this news — particularly those who knew Bertie.
