Chances are you have at least 20 apps on your phone right about now – but how many did you actually pay for?
Between checking your Facebook status, adding a moody shot to your Instagram or sending a WhatsApp to make weekend plans, most of the world’s biggest apps usually come without the price tag.
So it might come as a bit of a shock when you hear that owners of Apple products spent a whopping $20 billion in the App Store in 2015 – double the amount spent in 2013.
According to Time, Apple users even broke their own records this festive season, splashing the cash to the tune of $1.1 billion on apps and in-app purchases during the Christmas countdown.
New Year’s Day was also the biggest day in App Store history, with more than $144 million spent in the 24-hour period (we’re guessing there was a run on exercise or weight loss apps on this day).
So what were the highest grossing apps in 2015?
It probably won’t come as too much of a surprise to hear Netflix was a firm favourite, as well as Hulu and the game Clash of Clans.
