Amazon to stop accepting UK Visa credit cards from next week

Charlie Herbert

It’s because of a row between the two companies over transaction fees

From next week, Amazon will stop accepting payments using Visa credit cards issued in the UK.

The online retailer has said that Visa transaction fees will significantly affect its sellers and creates an “obstacle” for small online shops who try to keep their prices low in order to stay competitive.

The two companies had been trying to reach a resolution over the row.

But on Wednesday, Amazon said no agreement had been reached the Mirror reports.

So from January 19, Amazon customers will no longer be able to purchase goods using a Visa credit card that was issued in the UK.

“The cost of accepting card payments continues to be an obstacle for businesses striving to provide the best prices for customers,” an Amazon spokesman said.

“These costs should be going down over time with technological advancements, but instead they continue to stay high or even rise.

“As a result of Visa’s continued high cost of payments, we regret that Amazon.co.uk will no longer accept UK-issued Visa credit cards as of 19 January, 2022.

“Customers can continue to use all debit cards (including Visa debit cards) and other non-Visa credit cards to shop on Amazon.co.uk.”

Visa said in a statement it was “very disappointed that Amazon is threatening to restrict consumer choice in the future. When consumer choice is limited, nobody wins.”

Customers will still be able to use Visa debit cards, MasterCard and Amex credit cards, and Visa credit cards issued outside of the UK to pay for items.
