German chancellor Angela Merkel has been named TIME’s person of the year for 2015.
The German politician beat out competition from US presidential hopeful Donald Trump and ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
The magazine cited her work to stem the migrant and debt crises in Europe as the key factors in her selection, declaring her ‘the chancellor of the free world’.
Merkel is the first female recipient of the award in 29 years, and just the fourth since TIME began honouring individuals in 1927.
