Astronauts in the International Space Station tucked into a truly out-of-this-world meal as they ate food that had been grown entirely in space for the first time ever.
Scott Kelly, Kjell Lindgren and Kimiya Yui enjoyed some fresh red romaine lettuce they had been growing for the last 33 days as part of NASA’s “Veggie” experiment to grow food in space.
In his 1961 inauguration speech, JFK said: “Together, lettuce explore the stars.” Now his dream has finally come true.
This opens up the possibility of longer journeys for astronauts as they will no longer have to rely solely on the food that they bring with them.
Hopefully they’ll learn how to grow hamburger and chips pretty soon, because no-one wants to eat rabbit food all the way to Mars.
