Britain now has the highest number of recorded Covid deaths of any country in Europe
At least 225 front line healthcare workers have been confirmed as dying from coronavirus since the start of the pandemic.
The PA news agency has identified over 200 staff who died since March 11th, 2020, after contracting Covid-19.
The true number of death is almost definitely even higher, as not every death will have been made public. It also does take into account the family members of frontline workers who may have died after contracting the virus through them.
The list includes GPs, nurses, ambulance workers, consultants, health care assistants, porters, radiographers, surgeons, midwives and care workers.
The earliest recorded death on the chronological list is 56-year-old Helen Mills, a healthcare support worker at the minor injury unit at Neath Port Talbot Hospital in Wales. She was described by her colleagues as “kind and caring, with a dry sense of humour”.
The youngest is carer Sonya Kaygan, a “gentle, caring and kind-hearted” 26-year-old carer who left behind her three-year-old daughter.
Tony Chadbourne had worked for ambulance service in both Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire for 23 years. His family called him “an NHS hero who dedicated his life to his career.”
Val Stimson was a receptionist at the Kent and Canterbury Hospital, and a great-grandmother. Daughter Tina Bass said her mother “was passionate about working for the NHS, and really liked the fact she could help people.”
As of Sunday, 106,158 people in the UK had died within 28 days of a positive Covid-19 test. The total number of recorded cases now stands at 3,817,176.
Another 587 deaths were recorded on Saturday. The UK now has the highest number of recorded Covid deaths of any country in Europe.
Nearly nine million people have received a Coronavirus vaccine in the UK. The government aims to give 15 million people their first dose of a vaccine by mid-February.
Saturday was the first day that over 600,000 received a Covid jab.
