The singer came out to People magazine.
Legendary singer Barry Manilow – the man behind hits such as ‘Copacabana’ and ‘Mandy’ – has come out as gay at the age of 73.
Manilow has been in a relationship for 39 years with his manager Garry Kief. They met back in 1978.
The performer says that he always felt he would be upsetting his fans by revealing his sexuality, but says that the reaction has been universally positive.
“I thought I would be disappointing them if they knew I was gay. So I never did anything,” he revealed.
He married Kief in 2014 but kept it hidden from the public.
“I knew that this was it. I was one of the lucky ones. I was pretty lonely before that,” he said of his relationship with Kief.
“When (people) found out that Garry and I were together, they were so happy. The reaction was so beautiful – strangers commenting, ‘Great for you!’ I’m just so grateful for it.”
