Boris Johnson has rejected the idea of a national bank holiday once the pandemic subsides, saying people working from home have “had enough days off” during the pandemic.
The prime minister was asked at the Conservatives’ virtual spring forum of a bank holiday named “national hangover day” could be implemented to reward the people of Britain for all their work during this gruelling, sometimes traumatising year and a bit.
Johnson responded: “The general view is people have had quite a few days off, and it wouldn’t be a bad thing for people to see their way round to making a passing stab at getting back into the office.”
I don’t know about all of you, but it hasn’t felt like having more days off. In fact, many people working from home have reported working more hours than they would in the office during the work-from-home era.
This comes as the government embark on their second campaign to get people back into offices, much like they did in the autumn, pre-vaccine, to help boost the economy.
As the UK continues through its roadmap out of lockdown, official guidance remains to work from home if possible, with certain exceptions. But a review is expected in the coming weeks, as life gradually returns to some semblance of normality.
Workers share mixed feelings about working from home. Some are desperate to get back to a more social environment, while many have enjoyed not having to commute.
If the government had any sense, they would be encouraging companies to offer their workers a choice of both in order to create a healthy balance, which will inevitably lead to their employees being more productive. It’s not rocket science, is it?
