A judge in Los Angeles has granted Britney’s request to end the 13-year conservatorship

The legal arrangement which has controlled many aspect of Britney Spears’ life for the last 13 years has been terminated, a judge in Los Angeles has confirmed.

A large gathering of the pop star’s fans gathered outside the courthouse on Friday to hear that the conservatorship set up by Spear’ father, Jamie, in 2008 had come to an end with immediate effect.

Jamie Spears has claimed that the conservatorship, which had power over her finances, career decisions and personal matters, had been a “necessary” step but acknowledged it was time for his 39-year-old daughter to “re-take control of her life”.

“Her life was in shambles and she was in physical, emotional, mental and financial distress,” lawyers representing Mr Spears had said in earlier court filings.

Conservatorships are complicated legal orders that are put in place for people deemed unable to make their own decisions. In the case of Spears, it was used because of concerns over her mental health.

The singer had requested to end the conservatorship, with Judge Brenda Penny ruling in favour. A further hearing is scheduled on December 8 which will settle any outstanding financial issues.
