A captain has been arrested after holidaymakers in Mykonos were reportedly left injured when a ship caused a huge wave to wash up a beach.

Footage on social media shows the shocking moment the swell surged over the beach as people rushed to safety.

Tourists belongings were washed out to sea as the wave made its way entirely up the beach. The size of the wave also knocked people over who were in the water.

According to local media outlet Vradini, two people were injured in the incident and the captain was arrested when the Fast Ferries Andros ship docked at the port of Rafina in mainland Greece on Sunday (21 July).

The captain has been arrested on ‘dangerous interference with the transport of means of fixed orbit, ships and aircraft’ charges and for allegedly causing ‘physical injury due to negligence’.

The footage was also shared on Facebook by Takis Papadakos, who wrote: “Congratulations Fast Ferries for the captain of FastFerries Andros you have, he clearly ‘respected’ the health of the bathers of St. Stephen and passed as close and as fast as ever before, lest he miss 5 minutes of his itinerary!!!

“Forward to the profits, who counts human life… then we will all fall from the clouds, huh??? (the lady on the left of the video was hospitalised with two broken ribs, re-evaluation with X-rays in two days, and the video is part of the preliminary investigation by the Port Authority)”.

Vradini reports that the coast guard said two people in the water were injured by the wave.

They continued: “At the same time, deckchairs were swept away, as well as personal belongings of the people who bathed on the beach.

“When the ship docked at the port of Rafina, officers of the Rafina Port Authority arrested the master of FAST FERRIES ANDROS’ for violation of articles 291 par. 3 ‘Dangerous interference with the transport of means of fixed orbit, ships and aircraft’ and 314 ‘Physical injury due to negligence’ by P.K..

“A preliminary investigation is carried out by the Mykonos Port Authority.”
