The actress passed away peacefully in a London care home on Thursday evening
Actress Dame Barbara Windsor has died aged 83, it has been confirmed.
Dame Barbara, best known for her roles in EastEnders and the Carry On films died peacefully at a London care home on Thursday night.
Her husband Scott Mitchell, who was by her side when she passed away, confirmed the sad news, saying she would be remembered for the “love, fun, friendship and brightness she brought to all our lives”.
She had been living with Alzheimer’s since a diagnosis in 2014 and was moved into a care home earlier this year.
Her final appearance in EastEnders, in which she was well known for playing pub landlady Peggy Mitchell, came in 2016.
Prior to her stint on Albert Square, she had appeared in a total of nine of the 31 different Carry On films. She was also nominated for a Bafta for her role in Sparrows Can’t Sing and also played small parts in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and On the Fiddle, which featured Sir Sean Connery.
Following her dementia diagnosis, Dame Barbara became an ambassador for the Alzheimer’s Society.
“It was not the ending that Barbara or anyone else living with this very cruel disease deserve,” her husband said.
“I will always be immensely proud of Barbara’s courage, dignity and generosity dealing with her own illness and still trying to help others by raising awareness for as long as she could.”
