Donald Trump will visit London in December for a NATO summit with others heads of state.

Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced the president of the United States will be present.

No exact date has been given.

Mr Stoltenberg said the leaders will “address the security challenges we face now and in the future, and to ensure that NATO continues to adapt in order to keep its population of almost one billion people safe.”

He tweeted: “The next meeting of #NATO Heads of State and Government will take place in London in December. It is the ideal setting to mark 70 years of transatlantic cooperation, as the home of NATO’s first HQ back in 1949. Grateful to UK for hosting”

Theresa May said: “I am very pleased that the Secretary General has asked us to host a meeting of NATO leaders this year to mark its 70th anniversary.

“December’s meeting is an important opportunity to determine the steps we must now take to modernise the Alliance and ensure its continued success.”

Policing Trump’s last visit to the UK cost £8 million.

A petition to prevent an official state visit by Trump began in 2017 and attracted 1.8 million signatures. His ‘working visit’ last year attracted tens of thousands of demonstrators to protest his meetings with Theresa May and the Queen.

During that trip in July, the president visited Theresa May at Chequers and met the Queen at Windsor Castle.
