Commons Speaker, John Bercow, made it clear that President Trump will not be welcome to address parliament on his state visit.
Explaining that he was powerless to prevent a state visit from the newly-elected US president, Bercow said on Monday afternoon that he would use is role as one of the three ‘key-holders’ of Westminster Hall to stop Trump from addressing MPs ad peers. His unpresidented unprecedented intervention was greeted with cheers and applause from MPs.
“Before the imposition of the migrant ban, I would myself have been strongly opposed to an address by President Trump in Westminster Hall,” he explained.
“After the imposition of the migrant ban by President Trump, I am even more strongly opposed to an address from President Trump in Westminster Hall.”
Bercow’s speech was also well received by many outside of the House of Commons, too…
