Secret service agents surrounded him and escorted him off stage
Donald Trump has been shot during an election rally in Pennsylvania.
After several loud bangs were heard in the crowd, Trump ducked for cover holding his ear.
Several secret service agents jumped on stage to surround him. Moments later Trump stood up, still surrounded by agents, with blood visible around his ear and cheek.
The former president emerged from the crowd of agents and pumped his fist at the crowd.
One spectator at the event was killed, with two more being critically injured.
The gunman was shot and killed by the Secret Service.
“I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear,” Trump said in a statement.
“I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin.
“Much bleeding took place, so I realised then what was happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA!”
The 78-year-old has since left hospital and returned home to New Jersey.
The latest update comes from the FBI, who have released the name of who they believe was behind the attack.
“The FBI has identified Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the subject involved in the assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump on 13 July, in Butler, Pennsylvania,” they said in a statement.
“This remains an active and ongoing investigation.”
