Drivers, did you know there’s one thing you absolutely MUST do before setting off, especially in cold weather?
Amid the return of some extreme weather conditions, motorists were reminded of Rule 229 of the Highway Code which says drivers should ensure they have a clear view before setting off.
Experts recommended to rub a potato across a car’s windscreens to prevent frost and condensation from forming during cold weather spells. The starch from the spud creates a protective layer on the glass which acts as a barrier against moisture build-up.
Motorists are told to apply the hack the evening before their journey.
A spokesperson for Motor Match explained: “It might sound unusual, but rubbing the cut side of a potato onto your windscreen can make a big difference.
“The starch forms a protective film that stops moisture from sticking to the surface, so frost won’t settle as easily overnight, and condensation will be less likely to form during rainy or humid weather. The starch creates a hydrophobic effect, meaning water droplets won’t cling to the glass.”
