Russian troops are said to be using rape as ‘an instrument of war’
Ukraine’s prosecutor-general has opened an investigation into Putin’s troops after a drunk Russian soldier reportedly broke into a home, killed a man and repeatedly raped his wife.
Russian forces have been accused of storming homes and raping women in scenes reminiscent of the Red Army’s treatment of German women during its campaign against the Nazis in World War Two.
Iryna Venediktova opened Ukraine’s first official rape investigation into Russian forces following the reports of the rape attack by the drunk Russian soldier.
She said two soldiers attacked the woman in Brovarskyi district, east Kyiv, after having shot her husband dead. After sexually assaulting her, the pair then threatened her child with weapons.

Venediktova said that one of the soldiers has been identified and charges are being sought against him.
The woman survived the attack and provided evidence to investigators, the MailOnline reports.
In a post on Facebook, Venediktova wrote: “Let’s find every villain and make him accountable throughout the strictness of the law!”

Ukrainian MP Lesia Vasylenko said that the sexual violence against women by Russian soldiers was an example of ‘history repeating itself.’
In a tweet, she wrote: “2 million women were raped in Germany by Russians during WW2. #Russia again is using rape as an instrument of war. This time in #Ukraine. History repeats itself.”

This echoed the views of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who told the Italian parliament of Tuesday that Russian troops are “killing and raping people and kidnapping children.”
He added: “This is what Nazis did during the war when they occupied other countries.”
