Energy company E.On has blamed Martin Lewis for its website crashing the day before energy bills soar across the UK.
On Friday (April 1) Ofgem’s price cap hike comes into effect. This will see household energy bills will go up by 54 percent as the energy price cap goes up by £693 from £1,277 to £1,971 for those on a default tariff who pay by direct debit.
For prepayment customers, the increase will be even bigger, with their bills going up £708, from £1,309 to £2,017, the Independent reports.
Understandably, this has left thousands of customers concerned about what the price hike will mean for them.
Due to “unprecedented demand”, E.On’s website crashed on Thursday – and they decided to blame the Money Saving Expert for this.
Responding to a concerned customer who was asking when the website would be back up and running, the E.On replied: “Unfortunately the website and phone lines of every supplier are being hammered today.
They then accused Martin Lewis of creating “unprecedented demand bringing down Britain.”
The tweet in question has since been deleted and has been described as “outrageous”.

Martin Lewis has been providing advice and support ahead of the price hike and, as always, is an essential voice to listen to on these matters.
On Wednesday, he encouraged people to submit a meter reading to their energy supplier so that “firms can’t assign some your current usage to April” when rates are 54 percent higher.
Pls share. Thurs 31 Mar is energy #MeterReadingDay
So firms can't assign some of your current usage to April when rates are c54% higher
– Not smart meter? Send a reading (later in the day the better)
– Smart or prepay meter? Just take a meter pic for safety (in case of dispute)— Martin Lewis (@MartinSLewis) March 30, 2022
Fuel poverty charity National Energy Action is also encouraging people to submit meter readings for gas and electricity to their supplier on Thursday.
Today is the big day! Make sure you get a meter reading today to make sure that you're paying today's prices ahead of the increases.

The charity’s chief executive Adam Scorer said: “This is the biggest energy price shock in living memory.
“Millions of people will be priced out of adequate levels of heating and power. For all the anticipation of these price rises, many people on the lowest incomes will be crushed by the reality.”
