Former mayor of Toronto Rob Ford has died of cancer at the age of 46.
Ford gained worldwide notoriety when he admitted smoking crack while in office in October 2013. He had battled cancer for two years; an initial diagnosis of a rare liposarcoma in 2014 later spread to his bladder.
He leaves behind his wife Renata, children Stephanie and Douglas, mother Diane, brothers Doug and Randy, and sister Kathy.
In 2013, a video of Ford smoking crack did the rounds and caused shockwaves around the world.
The Canadian politician initially denied any wrongdoing, but later admitted to drug and alcohol abuse.
“People know that I saved a lot of money, and people are going to know that I had a few personal struggles,” he said in 2014 after being re-elected as a councillor.
“So you can remember it for what you want, but they’re definitely going to remember it.”
