There are literally hours to go.
The new plastic-y fivers aren’t to everyone’s tastes. Some people have complained that they don’t feel like money in their pocket, whilst others have argued you can’t fold them in half properly. And then there’s the not-so-small issue of them shrinking in the wash.
But they’re here to stay now, and if you weren’t already aware, you only have a matter of hours left to spend your old fivers in shops and bars around the country. That’s because they go out of circulation at midnight on Friday night.
That’s right, the old note’s usage as legal tender is quickly running out and as soon as the clocks strike 12am, no highstreet store or food/drink establishment in the country will accept them. So make sure you don’t get one in your change!
There is however a way of redeeming their value, despite the fact they’ll be useless over the counter. You’ll still be able to swap them for new fivers at banks and building societies, and failing that, you can always post them to the following address:
