She’s not mum, just Claire
In a Vogue ‘Get Ready With Me’ video, Grimes has revealed that her son X Æ A-XII calls her by her first name rather than ‘mum’.
In a video for Vogue’s ‘Get Ready With Me’, which has seen A-listers reveal their beauty secrets, the 33-year-old singer dished on music, movies and motherhood.
But rather than her son call her something traditionally maternal, he refers to her by her birth name, Claire Elise Boucher.
“Having a baby was a big kind of like rebirth for me, like artistically,” she told Vogue.
“Being a mother feels weird to say for some reason; I don’t identify with that word… Which is also really weird, ’cause X, he says ‘Claire’ but he doesn’t say like ‘Mama’, which is so, I’m like how are you… maybe he can sense my distaste for the word mother.”
The video also confirmed how Grimes refers to her son, which thank God is not as complicated as X Æ A-XII. X refers to the unknown variable in mathematics problems.
Last year, tech mogul Elon Musk and singer Grimes welcomed a new baby boy to their house named X Æ A-XII. Musk and Grimes seem to have different ideas about the pronunciation of their son’s name. Initially, Grimes tweeted a somewhat helpful explanation.
•X, the unknown variable ⚔️
•Æ, my elven spelling of Ai (love &/or Artificial intelligence)
•A-12 = precursor to SR-17 (our favorite aircraft). No weapons, no defenses, just speed. Great in battle, but non-violent 🤍

However, she later told Instagram fans that the ‘Æ’ was pronounced like Ai despite other outlets saying it’s pronounced like the ‘A’ in ‘cat’ or ‘bat’.
But then Musk spoke to Joe Rogan on his podcast to set the record straight.:
“It’s just X, the letter X. And then the Æ is, like, pronounced ‘ash,'” Musk told Rogan. “And then A-12 is my contribution… Archangel-12, the precursor to the SR-71, coolest plane ever.”
