The Labour leader challenged Theresa May to do the same, she hasn’t
Jeremy Corbyn has published his tax returns and revealed his yearly income.
The figures show the Labour leader paid £46,074.90 in tax and earned no income beyond his salaries as an MP for Islington North and the party job.
He earned £132,611 in 2017-18. £43,717 as leader of the opposition and £79,807 as an MP, as well as £6,648 in state pension and £2,438 in a Unison union pension, the Daily Mirror reports
Both Corbyn and his shadow chancellor John McDonnell published their returns, challenging prime minister Theresa May and chancellor of the exchequer Philip Hammond to do the same.
The return also shows that Corbyn was on the wrong tax code and had to pay a lump sum of more than £6,000 at the end of the financial year – aides insist this was picked up and paid on time.
The Labour king earned virtually no interest on savings, accruing only £1 of interest of the course of the year.
Corbyn said: “I believe that if we aim to reform our tax system to be more transparent, then politicians must lead by example.
“This is why I have published my tax return for the fourth time since becoming leader of the Labour Party.
“In Government, Labour will crack down on the scourge of tax avoidance and evasion and will put full transparency at the heart of our programme.”
It is the fourth year in a row Corbyn has published the documentation.
Theresa May published a summary of her earnings during the Tory leadership contest in 2016 but no information since, showing earnings of £112,426 as an MP and home secretary plus £6,036 in interest and dividends.
