His mate put his number out claiming it was O2
As you were probably aware, O2’s UK users were faced with a mobile data blackout on Thursday that meant many millions of people were unable to use their phones.
As a result, the network is liable to compensate users in certain circumstances, which you can read all about here to check whether you have entitled to make a claim.
What you shouldn’t do, however, is text a random telephone number you find on the internet with ‘REFUND’, in the hope of finding £50 added to your credit. Which is what caused this rather solemn sounding apology from the network that reads:
“We’ve seen individuals sharing numbers to call or text for compensation. These are not right and not from us. Please don’t respond. We started contacting all our customers directly yesterday and will keep doing so over the next few days.”

Well, O2. We might have just found what you’re on about…
Exhibit A.
Exhibit B.
Facebook user Martin Houston was the owner of the number, and he quite honourably did his bit by playing along with the many, MANY, gullible customers who took the opportunity to text a quite clearly NORMAL phone number to try and get themselves a refund.
We’re honestly not sure what they were expecting.

Proof, if you needed it, that there are still some very, very naive people out there.
