A man has been charged in connection with the attempted murder of Black Lives Matter activist Sasha Johnson.
Johnson, 27, was the victim of a shooting last Sunday night in South London and remains in critical condition following the attack.
An 18-year-old man from Lewisham has been charged with conspiracy to murder. He will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court today.
During the week, the Met police announced they had arrested five men in connection to the case, four of whom have now been bailed until June, with the other now being charged.
As well as helping to organise the first ever million people march last year in protest against systemic racism, Johnson is also among the leaders of the Taking The Initiative Party (TTIP), who were founded four years ago and recently fielded candidates in May’s round of local elections.
Earlier in the week, Met Police Commander Alison Heydari said: “We are aware of Sasha’s involvement in the Black Lives Matter movement in the UK and I understand the concern this will cause to some communities – however I wish to stress that at this time there is nothing to suggest Sasha was the victim of a targeted attack.
“We are also not aware of any reports of threats made against her prior to this incident.”
Heydari described the incident as “shocking” and said that the force’s “thoughts are with the family.”
