Unfortunately, Rayan could not be resuscitated after four days trapped down the well

A labourer who dug with his hands for three days in an attempt to rescue a five-year-old Morrocan boy trapped down a well last week is being healed as a hero.

Falling 32-metres (105ft) outside of his home in Ighran village, Rayan Awram became an international name as the world followed the story closely.

Workman Bwa Sahraoui is now being hailed as a hero after he dug with his bare hands for three days in the hopes of saving the boy. Unfortunately, it was confirmed on Saturday February 5 that Rayan had passed away.

While sharing their condolences, many are commending Sahraoui for his brave commitment to the rescue effort.

One Twitter user said: “For more than 20 hours he dug tirelessly to get Rayan out of the ground. Huge respect.”

Another added: “May God reward this man and grant him a place in paradise.

“He has done an amazing job since last night, he digs by hand.”

Rayan’s death was confirmed by his aunt, Atiqua Awram, who told local media: “My nephew, my heart is aching for him, too much. May God be with him, just like how God stood with us.”

Morocco’s King Mohammed VI also sent his condolences to the Awram family, and French President Emmanuel Macron wrote: “Tonight, I want to tell the family of little Rayan and the Moroccan people that we share their pain.”

Tributes have poured in across the world, and #SaveRayan was trending on Twitter throughout the rescue effort.

One person wrote: “Rayan may you rest with the angels… I wish you knew you were not alone all those days and that everyone around the world was praying for your safe return. Morocco did you proud.”

Another said: “Rest in peace, tears stream around the world for Rayan tonight – no regrets please from his rescuers because they honestly did everything they could to save that little boy!”
