Erik ten Hag was sacked earlier today after Manchester United slumped to 14th in the Premier League table following yesterday’s defeat to West Ham United.
His assistant Ruud van Nistelrooy will take over in the interim but fans have already begun to make their feelings clear over who they want to replace the 54-year-old.
Though former England manager Gareth Southgate has been linked with the job as has Xavi Hernandez, many are calling for a man who has been sacked by United before to resign for the club.
Jose Mourinho took the reigns at Old Trafford between May 2016 to December 2018, helping them to win the EFL Cup and the Europa League in the 2016/17 season.
However, after a poor start to the 2018/19 season, with just seven wins in the first 17 Premier League games, leaving United 19 points behind the league leaders, he was sacked by the club.
However, fans on Twitter have expressed their wish for the Portuguese manager to return.
One said: “TBH I’d love Mourinho to come back please.”
Another said: “Reckon they should get Mourinho back.”
A third said: “I’ll take Mourinho again if it means resetting that culture and dressing room and bringing us back to the top again.”
Mourinho recently came face-to-face with his old club as his current side Fenerbahce held them to a draw in Europe last week.
The 61-year-old was sent off following his touchline dramatics which stole the show as he felt his team had been unfairly denied a penalty.
During his managerial career he has won league championships in four different countries.
He won three Premier League titles with Chelsea, the Champions League twice – once with Porto and once with Inter Milan, as well as La Liga during his spell with Real Madrid amongst other accolades.
He is also the only manager to have won all three current UEFA club competitions.
