Sweet, innocent Mary
Mary Berry is actually a hard case and had all of us thinking she’s the epitome of grandma.
Oh no Nelly! Mary is hard, a bit of rough, a “nutter” in the immortal words of Noel Fielding’s Hitcher.
The 83-year-old has told how she was arrested after trying to take small plastic bags of flour and sugar through airport security.
Mary said: “I was arrested 25 years ago. I was going to the US to do some cookery demonstrations and was worried that there might be problems so I weighed out all the ingredients – flour, sugar – and put them all in little plastic bags.
“When I arrived at the airport the sniffer dogs made a bee-line for me.
“Suddenly I was surrounded by uniformed people and my assistant and I were put in separate cells. It was alarming. When I was asked if was going to make money from the stuff, I said, ‘I do and my fee has already been agreed.'”
The Great British Bake Off hero was appearing on The Graham Norton Show alongside Claudia Winkelman, with whom she is co-hosting Britain’s Best Home Cook.
Winkelman said she was over the moon at the chance to work with Berry, but discovered she had a “darker side,” in reference to the arrest.
