Viewers were quick to pick up on the mix-up
BBC Breakfast host Naga Munchetty made a live-on-air blunder earlier today when she got her Boris’s mixed up – incorrectly suggesting that the PM had spent the “night in prison”.
Alongside co-host Ben Thompson, Munchetty was discussing tennis star Boris Becker who was jailed yesterday afternoon after being found guilty of hiding thousands of pounds worth of assets and loans in order to avoid paying his debts.
The sports icon was sentenced on Friday April 29 after being found guilty of four charges under the Insolvency Act and will serve a two-and-a-half years in prison.
However while discussing the incident during the BBC‘s morning breakfast show, Munchetty got two very famous Boris’s muddled up.
‘Three-times Wimbledon champion Boris Johnson has just spent his first night in prison,” she began, incorrectly referencing the prime minister instead of the famed tennis player.
“He was sentenced for two-and-a-half years for hiding assets to avoid paying debts.”
Oblivious to the error, Munchetty then passed over to her co-host Thompson who introduced sports reporter Mike Bushell who continued to discuss Becker’s situation.
However viewers online didn’t let this blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment go unnoticed and before long, reactions were pouring in online – with many filming the clip on their phones.

Did anyone else spot that little faux pas of Naga Munchetty‘s this morning? Didn’t know Boris Johnson was a 3 x Wimbledon champion and spent his first night in prison 😂 pic.twitter.com/Z59SpNnCvT

While the PM certainly hasn’t spent the night in prison, Johnson is still facing intense pressure following recent Partygate fines as the May 5 polling date for council elections fast approaches.
