New Zealand could replace their national flag with one of these new designs

Nooruddean Choudry

The New Zealand government have published a long list of 40 possible designs for a new flag.

The campaign to change the current design was initiated by Prime Minister John Key who wanted a flag “that better reflects our status as a modern, independent nation.”

Although many are in favour of  a redesign, critics point to the estimated cost of $17 million for a new standard.

A panel will choose four designs from the long list by mid-September, and the general public will be asked the vote in a referendum for their favourite from the final shortlist.

There will then be a second referendum in March 2016, when the nation will decide between the current flag and the new favoured design.
