Newcastle and Sunderland declare the first results of Election Night

Newcastle Central beat Sunderland in becoming became the first constituency to declare its results on Election night.

As expected, Labour retained their seat in Newcastle – Chi Onwurah receiving 24,071 of the votes.

Steve Kyte, representing the Conservatives, received 9,134 of the votes, whereas Steve Kyte of the Liberal Democrats came third with 9,134 of the votes.

Labour also kept their seat in Sunderland, although problems with the sound system meant figures were initially unclear.

Earlier on Thursday evening, the exit polls indicated a hung parliament, with the Conservatives falling 12 seats short of the 326 needed for an  absolute majority in the House of Commons. Labour were on 266, followed by the Scottish National Party on 34 and Liberal Democrats on 14. Plaid Cymru had three with the Green Party put on one.
