At 99-years-old, Prince Philip leaves hospital after longest stay in hospital to date
Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, was admitted to King Edward VII’s Hospital around four weeks ago with an infection. Since then, he has received treatment, undergone surgery, and was discharged today.
Given his advanced age and the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, concerns around his condition were heightened. This is not Prince Philip’s first stay in hospital by any means.
The Duke is believed to have been suffering from recurring heart problems since 2011. He has previously been treated for a blocked coronary artery, which involved minimally invasive coronary stenting.
This is essentially a procedure that stretches out the artery in order for a blockage to be cleared. It is still unclear as to the specific nature of his most recent heart surgery.
Philip underwent surgery at St. Bart’s Hospital on March 3rd and had already received his first Covid jab back in January. The Prince is set to turn 100 this June and was moved back to King Edward’s a few days ago.
It remains to be seen whether he will be returning straight to the Queen at Windsor Castle. The pair have been married for 73 years and have been living with reduced staff in the ‘HMS bubble’.
