The roaming charges in 2025 for Three, O2, EE and Vodafone
Roaming data charges came into force in 2023 for many of the largest UK mobile providers.
While it used to be free to use your mobile phone abroad with many companies they have now hiked the price up with some charging as much as £2.42 per day to use your data.
Three, Vodafone, Sky and EE all charge you by the day for using data in Europe, while only O2 of the major companies allows you to roam without additional charges.
For those on a network with roaming charges there is another option. You can get a temporary SIM card that offers free data roaming at a cheaper rate.
While that means you will have to use an emergency number, you can still connect your WhatsApp and other social media to your new number.
Slice Mobile is a good option. The eSIM means you will not have to fiddle with SIM cards and costs just £5 for three months including EU data roaming. You can get that via the website here.
Others such as Smarty offer a rolling 30-day contract for as little as £7 and that includes up to 12GB of EU roaming. You can then cancel your contract when you return home.
If you want to stick to your current mobile provider here are the expected costs to roam across Europe.
Three data roaming costs
A two week holiday to Europe will cost you up to £28 at Three and anywhere else around the world will cost an eye-watering £70 for just 14 days of data. There are ‘passports’ you can buy to avoid paying by the day but there are only limited savings to be made there.
It costs £2 per day in Europe at Three and £5 anywhere else. Some places are labelled as ‘World Extra’ destinations and cost £7 for 24 hours of data.
Even with a roaming pass Three will charge you if you use more than 12GB of data. You can check your contract here.
O2 data roaming costs
Out of the major phone operators O2 is probably the friendliest for those visiting Europe.
They are the the only major network that isn’t bringing back EU roaming charges for up to 25GB. That means you are free to use your phone across the Europe Zone (40+ destinations), you’re free to call, text and use data just like you would in the UK, subject to a roaming limit.
If you’re a Volt customer or you’re on a Plus Plan, you get inclusive roaming in 27 destinations outside Europe with the O2 Travel Inclusive Zone.
EE data roaming costs
In order to access your minutes, texts and data allowance while travelling in the EU, EE has a daily charge of £2.47.
If you’re going to be away for more than 11 days and are planning to use your phone every day, it would be cheaper to get EE’s Roam Abroad Pass. You can add this as one of your Inclusive Extras if that’s part of your current plan here, or add it as an add-on that you can cancel at any time.
Both options cost £25 a month and mean you won’t have to pay the daily £2.47 charge.
Vodafone data roaming costs
Some Vodafone plans include roaming to 51 or 83 destinations depending on the one you chose. You can check your plan here.
Those without roaming will be charged £2.42 a day on top of your existing plan for calls, texts and up to 25GB of data.
Sky Mobile data roaming costs
Sky Mobile charges £2 per day for access your UK data, calls and texts plan in 55 popular holiday destinations as part of the Roaming Passport Plus pass.
Sky says the charges will kick in automatically if data roaming is turned on with your mobile.
