“RRS Boaty McBoatface” isn’t even the best name suggested for that research ship

Boaty McBoatface.

That’s the name that’s currently sitting top of a poll asking members of the public to name the Natural Environment Research Council’s (NERC) new vessel.

Because if you ask the internet a question, you’re going to get a few joke answers.

The poll to name the £200m Antarctic research vessel is the current internet champion thanks to a number of hilarious suggestions.

But will the NERC vessel, which is planned to set sail around Antarctica and the Arctic in 2019, actually be named RRS Boaty McBoatface?

Unfortunately, the answer could be no. Deep in the poll’s terms and conditions, the website states “the final name will be selected by NERC.”
