Sainsbury’s recall vegan lasagne – as it contains pork, beef and milk

Customers who purchased the product have been offered a full refund.

Sainsbury’s has had to urgently recall one of its vegan ready meals after it was found to contain pork, beef and dairy.

The ‘Love Your Veg’ butternut squash and lentil lasagne with a use by date of July 17 contained the filling for the chain’s Bolognese Melt, meaning that it contained pork, beef and milk. Along with posing ethical issues over the product, this also posed a risk to anyone allergic to these ingredients.

A notice from the Food Standards Agency said: “Sainsbury’s is recalling Sainsbury’s Love Your Veg Butternut Squash and Lentil Lasagne because it contains milk which is not mentioned on the label.

“This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents. The product also contains pork and beef which are also not mentioned on the label as the product has been incorrectly packed with Sainsbury’s Bolognese Melt.”

The news about the product has understandably upset a number of people.

On Twitter, one user wrote: “Wow @sainsburys – if there’s one thing I rely on with the vegan ready meals, it’s that they’re vegan! What assurance can you give me that this is an isolated aberration and not endemic sloppy manufacture?”

Another pointed out the seriousness of the issue, writing: “People are making light of a vegan lasagne ready-meal from Sainsbury’s being recalled after it was found to contain milk, pork and beef.

“But for people who avoid dairy for allergies it’s pretty serious – and personally if I ate meat by accident I’d be both very sick and upset.”

A third described the debacle as a “total disgrace” and said that they were “utterly disgusted.”

Sainsbury’s has apologised, and their advice to customers is to return the ready meal in question to the store is was purchased from for a full refund. People are encouraged to phone the company’s Careline or visit their website if they have any further concerns or questions.
