The Daily Mail causing controversy isn’t really a news story as much as it is an everyday occurrence.
But even so, a columnist’s decision to use inverted commas when describing Stephen Fry’s husband, Elliott Spencer, has quite rightly been condemned by the internet.
The Mail’s article about the couple, who married last year, bafflingly labelled 28-year-old Spencer as Fry’s ‘husband’.
The error was pointed out by BBC Radio 5 Live presenter Nicky Campbell on Twitter.

Campbell’s tweet was followed by an onslaught of disgruntled replies, many of which had their own ideas about the appropriate use of inverted commas.
@NickyAACampbell which 'newspaper'?
— Victoria Richards (@nakedvix) March 3, 2016

— Duncan (@duncanm) March 3, 2016
@NickyAACampbell Because it was written by a 'journalist' – looks like the dinosaurs are not yet extinct.

@NickyAACampbell Don't argue. It's a 'newspaper', so it tells you the 'truth'

@NickyAACampbell Because 'ooh it's icky' – every Daily Mail reader ever.

@nickyaacampbell Because “prejudice” and “ignorance” will always exist in the minds of the narrow?
