It’s easy to bash The Sun. “Fun too,” as Homer Simpson once said.
The British press is a complicated beast, but very occasionally things are so simple that a child could understand it. In the case of The Sun‘s special new masthead, not only can a child understand it, you could be forgiven for thinking a child had designed it.
The child in question is legendary British painter David Hockney. He’s 79 and a very well-respected artist, so it hurts to take the piss out of an old man who’s normally pretty good at this sort of thing, but this is just shite. If you trained a dog on Photoshop you’d get a better masthead.
Art is in the eye of the beholder, so you’d better behold your eyes all over this thing and make your own mind up.
Now we know what you’re thinking, and no, this isn’t a wind-up. This will actually appear on tomorrow’s edition of The Sun. This is 100% legit.
Look, here’s a tweet from The Sun with David Hockney standing in front of the masthead he designed.

But wait, it gets better. In an article about Hockney’s work, The Sun explain that the artist “created the updated design on his iPad”. What they neglect to say is that it took him less than three minutes and was completely by accident.
Alas, these last two points are not true: this was entirely deliberate. Hockney himself said: “I was delighted to be asked. Once I thought about the idea it didn’t take me long. The sun and The Sun.”
The sun.
The Sun.
Cor, this art business is trickier than it looks.
For contrast, here’s a few of David Hockney’s other paintings.
The answer is clear. David Hockney is working to take down The Sun from the inside. We’re not the only ones who think so.

David Hockney must hate The Sun as much as the rest of us

We’ve changed our minds. This is the greatest piece of art ever created.
