It is a deeply moving image that shows a man holding onto his family for dear life, a look of desperate exhaustion etched across his face.
For many it symbolised the struggle of innocent people escaping the horrors of their homeland, only to face unimaginable peril and prejudice as they seek refuge on European shores.
The sheer naked humanity of the image caused it to go viral. Who couldn’t relate to the love of a father and husband doing all he can to protect his loved ones?
To those who attack 'migrants' online. Look at this man, fleeing war in Syria, cradling his children. And rethink. pic.twitter.com/1pXEIGStvN

The man’s name is Laith Majid, a Syrian refugee from Deir Ezzor. He is holding his daughter Nour and clasping his son Taha’s head. Wife Neda is knelt by his side.
The picture was taken by Daniel Etter for the New York Times. The German photographer saw the family arrive at the Greek island of Kos after a treacherous journey across the Mediterranean Sea.
For those who were worried about what became of Majid and his young family, there is good news.
Laith (44), wife Neda (43), sons Mustafa (18), Ahmed (17), Taha (9) and daughter Nour (7) are safe and sound, having found refuge in Berlin.
The English teacher and his family have been welcomed by the local German community, according to Bild, and look forward to a life of peace and safety as German citizens.
