Trump referenced the US team’s shock defeat to Sweden as an example of how “wokeism” is bad for the country
Former US president Donald Trump has blamed the country’s women’s football team’s shock loss to Sweden at the Olympics on woke culture.
Speaking at the ‘Rally to Protect Our Elections’ in Phoenix at the weekend, Trump said that wokeism “makes you lose” and “ruins you as a person.”
He said: “Wokeism makes you lose, ruins your mind, and ruins you as a person. You become warped. You become demented. The US women’s soccer team is a very good example of what’s going on.
“Earlier this week they unexpectedly lost to Sweden, 3-0, and Americans were happy about it.”

Of course, Trump has been a long time critic of what he calls ‘wokeism’ and woke culture, particularly in the world of sport.
Back in 2017, he called NFL players who knelt during the national anthem in protest against police brutality “sons of bitches,” and then last year blamed declining NBA ratings on Black Lives Matter messaging that was on courts and players’ uniform.
The US women’s football side have never been afraid to speak out on racial and social equality issues either. They have been taking the knee for 10 seconds before each of their games at the Olympics, and midfielder Megan Rapinoe has long been vocal in her fight for gender and social equality.
Before the Olympics, Rapinoe explained why the team felt it was important to take the knee before games this summer.
She told the Associated Press: “It’s an opportunity for us to continue to use our voices and use our platforms to talk about the things that affect all of us intimately in different ways.
“We have people from Team USA, from all over the country, from all backgrounds, and people literally from all over the world for every other team so I obviously encourage everyone to use that platform to the best of their ability to do the most good that they possibly can in the world, especially as all eyes are on Tokyo these next couple weeks.
“We’re on the global stage, with the world’s media, and eyeballs and people’s attention, all drawn to one place with a collection of incredible athletes from all over the world, who care a lot about what they’re doing here in Tokyo in terms of their sport, and who care a lot about a lot of other things.”
Oh and you may be wondering how the US side performed after their defeat to Sweden, with their warped, demented and ruined minds. Well, they thrashed New Zealand 6-1 in their next game.
Unlucky Donald.
